This does not mean every worker lived the same life or that labor was necessarily voluntary in the modern sense.

But the simple image of countless chained slaves building the Great Pyramid is not supported by the archaeological picture.
The reality appears to have involved a complex workforce operating within the Egyptian state.

The Great Pyramid is often presented as a mystery of ancient technology.
But perhaps its most important lesson is less mysterious.
The Egyptians did not need modern machines to accomplish an extraordinary engineering project.

Reliable food supplies.
Transportation.
Surveying.
Administration.
Stoneworking expertise.
Thousands of coordinated decisions.
The pyramid was ultimately a demonstration of what a highly organized society could accomplish.
The Great Pyramid has survived earthquakes, erosion, changing civilizations, looting, tourism, and more than four millennia of history.
Its original polished outer casing has largely disappeared, but the enormous core remains.

We know who built it.
We know approximately when it was built.
We know why it was constructed.
