Weapons of the Samurai: Beyond the Katana

Dr. Tariq Al-Hashimi Read Time: 7 mins
Paper Abstract:

The Katana was not the only weapon of the samurai; explore Yumi bows, Naginata polearms, and Matchlock firearms.

When we think of samurai, the legendary curved Katana instantly comes to mind. However, on the battlefield of feudal Japan, samurai maintained a full arsenal covering every combat range.

The asymmetric Yumi bow was their primary weapon on horseback, followed by long Yari spears in formation battles. When Portuguese matchlocks arrived in 1575, volley fire reshaped Japanese military strategy at Nagashino.
